CAREGIVER
SHORTAGE

As the North American population continues to age it is struggle to keep up with the growing demand for paid caregivers.

According to one AARP report, three out of four seniors over 50 want to age in place at home.

Those same older adults will need additional assistance, typically from paid or family caregivers, to thrive at home.

43%

This is the average US national turnover rate of direct support professionals working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 2019.

800K+

Older Americans needing subsidized care are on waiting lists because of the lack of available workers.

20M+

Seniors and people with disabilities require long-term services and support. And most want them at home or in the community, as opposed to in an institution.

WHY IS THERE A CAREGIVER CRISIS?

Steadily growing demand, consistently low pay and inadequate supply numbers have created the current caregiver shortage occurring across the country. A multitude of factors have led us to this point.

IMMIGRATION ISSUES

One in four in-home caregivers is an immigrant. Changes in immigration laws and policies directly impact the workforce supply of people able and willing to take on these low-paying jobs. The caregiver labor pool would benefit from reformed immigration laws.

A DISRESPECTED LINE OF WORK

Home health aides have pointed out they often feel disrespected by other medical workers and sometimes by their clients. Some have noted they are flatly ignored by nurses when providing updates on a client’s health. Clients may be dealing with intellectual delays that can cause them to lash out at the direct support worker trying to help them. Or they may simply be frustrated that they require assistance with daily tasks.

LACK OF FUNDING

The need for the assistance of a direct support worker typically can last for many weeks and in some cases may last months or years based on the client’s health. The cost for such services quickly adds up.

By raising awareness of the challenges we face from the caregiver shortage and developing strategies to improve the situation, there is hope that the choice to pursue a career as a direct care worker will become more appealing and benefit us all.

TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP INNOVATE CARE

In addition to the steps that the private and public sectors can take to address this crisis, technology will continue to be a massive proponent of innovation when leveraged properly. While major advancements have been made in autonomous aspects using technology, where technology can be most useful is through the implementation of data to better empower caregivers and provide a more streamlined experience, be it in the paid or unpaid sector.

USING AI

AI can significantly enhance immigration and staffing processes in several ways:

  • Streamlining Applications: AI can automate the processing of immigration applications, reducing the time and effort required for data entry, document verification, and eligibility assessments.

  • Data Analysis: AI algorithms can analyze large sets of data to identify trends and patterns in immigration, helping organizations understand workforce needs and the availability of skilled labor.

  • Talent Matching: AI can assist in matching candidates with job openings based on their skills, experience, and preferences, leading to more efficient staffing solutions.

  • Predictive Analytics: AI can use historical data to predict future immigration trends, helping organizations plan for staffing needs and compliance with regulations.

  • Chatbots for Information: AI-powered chatbots can provide real-time assistance and information to both employers and potential employees about immigration processes, requirements, and job opportunities.

  • Compliance Monitoring: AI can help monitor compliance with immigration laws and regulations, ensuring that organizations avoid potential legal issues.

  • Language Translation: AI can facilitate communication by providing translation services, making it easier for organizations to interact with diverse populations.

  • Training and Development: AI can identify skill gaps in the workforce and suggest training programs, ensuring that staff is well-prepared for their roles.

By leveraging these capabilities, organizations can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the overall experience for both employers and employees in the immigration and staffing processes.
